my birth bag contents vary depending if i'm going to attend a birth, a prenatal meeting, or a postpartum visit. these are some of my favorite things to always keep on hand for both clients and myself!
The Birth Sling was created for Birthing Mamas & Birth Workers as a way to encourage upright and active birth no matter where you choose to birth
The Birth Sling, which has been coined “a game changer for active birth positioning” is a birthing tool created by Osteopath, birth worker, and new mom, Jess Michaels
a simple plastic comb can be a great way to decrease pain perception at the peak of contractions
this method can help to essentially distract your brain, by creating non-painful sensations while gripping it in the palm of your hand
while real flames are a safety concern in birth centers or hospitals, fairy lights and LED candles are a great way to set the mood and keep the lighting low in your birthing space
a mini-diffuser and a variety of essential oils including lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, & even a special labor-blend to keep your birth space feeling serene, & smelling amazing
keeping a set of reference cards on hand can be a quick way to help clients visualize and understand specific positioning, and explain why each one could be helpful for the different stages of labor
for prenatal meetings & education, a pelvic model is a great way to demonstrate the way our pelvis moves and how we can utilize that movement to allow baby optimal space
these are great for applying more pressure where the birthing person needs it, or simply using as a gentle massage tool between contractions or during pregnancy
"The Birth Partner" is one of my personal favorites, but I sometimes alternate which book I want to keep on hand
"Why Did No One Tell Me This? The Doula's Honest Guide for Expectant Parents" is another one of my favorites
the rebozo is a traditional Mexican shawl that has been used by midwives & birth workers during labor for years and years
the rebozo has many uses, but can be using during labor as a comfort measure & as a tool for certain positioning
if you plan to purchase a rebozo, please buy authentic, ethical, handmade pieces
these pocket guides from Evidence Based Birth® are a quick reference tool to refresh your memory on comfort measures, positioning, and pain control
the labor induction pocket guide is great for covering the background and reasons for induction, and the various medical/natural induction methods
My other necessities include a foam yoga block, unopened chapstick for clients, extra hair ties or hair clips, body lotion, protein bars, affirmation cards, and whatever else I feel called to that day!
